Easter Bonnet Parade

This year Easter was during our school holidays,
so all of our Easter activities came early.

We had an Easter bonnet parade for the kids at our local kindergarten. We paraded our hats to them, and they did the same for us. It was very cool! We saw some of our old Kinder teachers there.

We also had a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny too. When we arrived in the morning there were big bunny footprints all around the pods, leading to the baskets that we made. The Easter Bunny had given us some yummy chocolate eggs to munch on. Hopefully some of us shared them with our families at home.

BUDDIES!!!

Last week the Preps met up with our Year 4 buddies again. We spent our first session together having a chat and getting to know each other. Then we spoke about our school values and wrote about when we have displayed them. We will be together for the whole year, doing lots of fun activities together. Our buddies told us that we can see them in the playground to ask for help, or simply to just say hello.

Lydia- “Buddies will be good because you get to see a new person.

Carlos -“I like my buddy because they are fun.”
Pearl -“Our buddies will help us to do things.”

Jonno -“Our buddies are going to help us if we’re in trouble.”

CRAZY HAIR DAY!!

Friday the 11th of March was Crazy Hair Day at The Lakes. It is run in conjunction with the World's Greatest Shave, which supports the Leukaemia Foundation, and was organised by the Early Years SRC.

We Preps were not shy about doing something crazy with our hair. We had more spikes, plats, ponytails and different hair colours than we normally do.

Here are some of photos...

Preps at Clean Up Day

Last Friday was Clean Up Schools Day, which is part of Clean Up Australia Day. We were visited at The Lakes by members of Waterwatch and City of Whittlesea, who ran four activities for us. Each activity centred on the environment and the impact we have on it. As our school is located next to a waterway (Darebin Creek) if we don't ensure our rubbish goes in bins it may end up in the creek, which will then affect local wildlife and their habitats.

Rubbish relay activity- students walked along the creek near our school, as well as in the yard, to pick up litter. Students spoke about the importance of recycling and putting rubbish in the bin, and how litter can affect the habitats of creatures in waterways.

Water testing activity- students tested the health of waters in the creek and measured water quality with a scientific testing kit.

Frog Discovery activity- students learnt about using the sounds frogs make to identify different species, as well as discussed the various life stages of frogs.

Waterbug Discovery activity- students identified species of waterbugs using charts, and studied their environments.

We hope that by participating in these activities we will become more aware of the positive impact we can have on our environment and that we can encourage others to do the same.

Me In My World

Our unit focus in Prep this term in 'Me In My World'. We are learning about all of the people who help us.
People in our families help us at home. Teachers help us at school. And there are many other people who help us in our community- Police, Firefighters, Doctors, Vets...

We are making models of our homes using Lego and blocks.

We are drawing pictures of our families in photo frames.

We are making models of our families with tap-tap boards.

We are making collages of families from pictures in magazines.

See you soon...

It's never too late to talk about cupcakes!

A couple of weeks back while learning about the letter 'c', the Preps made Cupcakes. Each Prep student helped to make a batch of delicious Cupcakes in their Home Groups. There were Cupcakes with icing, Cupcakes with sprinkles, strawberry Cupcakes... lots of yummy cupcakes!
Thankfully we didn't have to wait until we learned about the letter 'e' to Eat them.
See you soon...

This week in Maths.

This week in Maths we've been continuing to explore numbers and counting through various activities. We are having lots of fun working with students from other Home Groups too, which means there are more kids to share our learning with.

We have also started practising to count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.

We've been playing Maths games on the smartboard, making patterns with threading, playing number memory, shape sorting, practising writing numerals and making number towers with unifix.

Nothing to do but keep practising.

Until next time...
