Preps at Clean Up Day

Last Friday was Clean Up Schools Day, which is part of Clean Up Australia Day. We were visited at The Lakes by members of Waterwatch and City of Whittlesea, who ran four activities for us. Each activity centred on the environment and the impact we have on it. As our school is located next to a waterway (Darebin Creek) if we don't ensure our rubbish goes in bins it may end up in the creek, which will then affect local wildlife and their habitats.

Rubbish relay activity- students walked along the creek near our school, as well as in the yard, to pick up litter. Students spoke about the importance of recycling and putting rubbish in the bin, and how litter can affect the habitats of creatures in waterways.

Water testing activity- students tested the health of waters in the creek and measured water quality with a scientific testing kit.

Frog Discovery activity- students learnt about using the sounds frogs make to identify different species, as well as discussed the various life stages of frogs.

Waterbug Discovery activity- students identified species of waterbugs using charts, and studied their environments.

We hope that by participating in these activities we will become more aware of the positive impact we can have on our environment and that we can encourage others to do the same.
